A Few Pieces of My Life

May 26, 2010 - 12:08 am 4 Comments

I haven’t posted in a while and I’ve been up to quite a bit lately.  I’d like to share several things with you.

I discovered journals with sewn paper and fabric.  I fell in love with the way they look, so I tried my hand at them.  I am not much of a seamstress so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed sewing.

This is the cover.  I don’t like it very much.  And, I’ll warn you that I didn’t cut all the threads before I took the pictures, so it looks pretty scraggly.  The cover was difficult because I wasn’t sewing the fabric on to a back. Just trying to form the rectangle shape of the cover by sewing pieces together.

Here are a few of the pages.  I planned them with lots of paper on each page because I write a LOT in my journals.

A while back I showed you a chair and a stool that I got from our neighbor who is moving and getting rid of stuff. Wellllll, the other day they were loading the moving truck and I guess they didn’t have enough room because they put an antique desk out in the alley!!!!  I nabbed it so fast it would make your head spin.  It’s so unique.

(It is sitting in our laundry room, where I sometimes do art, so excuse the mess in the pictures.)

When you first see it, it looks like a hall table.

But when you pull up the knobs, it reveals a little desk!  The board you can see with the indentions, actually slides out to create a larger work space.  See the little cubby holes?  Isn’t it great?

Today Mister and I went fishing.  It was wonderful to be in the sunshine.  And I saw some nice nature.  These are some pictures I took.

This is the shore near where we were fishing.

The colors of the sunset were reflected on the ripples in the water.  And there’s a Big Bird cloud, too!

And another shot of the shoreline and the sky.

This was so cool!!  I saw this cloud that looked like a fish.

I looked at the water to see what the reflection of this fish looked like.  How cool is this?

So, that’s what I’ve been up to lately.  Oh!  Except for a secret.  :)     Kristina and I are creating a website that you are going to LOVE, if you are involved in the online art community.  It’s really awesome.  We’re hoping to launch it in a week or so, so stay tuned for that.

Attitude of Gratitude – B

January 12, 2010 - 11:12 pm No Comments

Photo A Day

This little squirrel lives in our yard.  He only has half a tail.  I don’t know what happened to the other half but it’s just blunt on the end.  His right back leg doesn’t work either.  He’s a little daredevil that keeps getting in scrapes and coming out handicapped.  Mister calls him “Chester”.  Today we thre some corn out  and he sat there eating it kernel by kernel.  He only at the “root” end and threw away most of the kernel itself.  He was so cute just picking them and eating them one by one.

Alphabet of Gratitude – “B”

Let’s be thankful for all the “B” stuff in our lives.  Here’s my list:

bed
blankets
babies
boys
bubble bath
band-aids
blank books
books
burritos
brownies
Blistex
bags

What’s on your list?

My Newest Toy

March 23, 2009 - 3:38 am 2 Comments

Mister got me the coolest tool! It’s a tiny miter box.  It is just the right size for sawing small things.  It fits in the bench vise he got me.  I was cutting pencils to little short ones to use as charms on a necklace, and this is just perfect for that!

Sorry about the flash, but hopefully you can tell that this is the little miter box in the vise.

This is a shot from the top, with me sawing a pencil.  The little pegs are used to hold in place whatever you are sawing.  There are several angles marked on it so you make precise cuts.  Even though the little saw looks like a knife it is a very precise saw.  It only takes 2 or 3 saws and the pencil is cut, very cleanly.

I am so blessed to have a guy that knows how to find such cool tools and buys them for me!!!

Jill Badonsky Blog Tour

February 11, 2009 - 10:19 pm No Comments

thumbnail-picI am thrilled to be able to interview Jill Badonsky today.  She is the author of Nine Modern Day Muses (and A Bodyguard) which is a fantastic, inspiring and encouraging book. Jill’s website is so fun!  Be sure to sign up for her newsletter.

She is doing a blog tour to talk about her new book,  The Awe-Manac, A Daily Dose of Wonder. Each day a different blog is posting an interview with Jill about the book.  You can track all the interviews at Jill’s blog about the blog tour.

After reading the interview, I know you’ll want to go check out the book here.  At the bottom of this post, you get to see a page of the book that Jill has graciously given us.

Zura:  I am so happy to have the privilege of interviewing you, Jill.  I feel so lucky that I get to peek inside your brain and ask you questions.  Almost a month and a half into your tour now, are you sick of answering questions about yourself?

Jill: I feel completely indulgent answering so many questions about myself and it’s really interesting to read what I have to say about myself because it’s never what I thought I was going to say.. so no. The other thing is, people like you are asking GREAT questions, so thanks for making it easy.

Zura: The Awe-Manac just looks fun!  Did you have fun writing and illustrating it?

Jill:  Once I figured out what it was supposed to be, I had a blast. It was like a good drug but without the side effects. I laughed out loud a lot because I felt like I was channeling someone really funny. At the beginning, figuring out what the book was supposed to be made my brain hurt.

Zura:  Jill, I know you to be highly creative, intelligent, playful and spontaneous.  Many creative people who share these traits with you often find it hard to focus and stay organized in order to achieve their goals.  How have you been able to stay spontaneous and yet run a successful business and write two major books?

Jill:  It’s not easy. I just honor that some days are going to be completely unfocused and spontaneous in order to cut down on the resistance to being focused on the days when things need to get done. I also operate very intuitively and just set out to do a number of things that make sense in the moment – this makes it fun. I also use the same device I’ve included in The Awe-manac. I make a “Get-to-Do List” rather than a To-Do list and this makes everything sound like it’s going to be fun. I really feel I am blessed with having a business I am absolutely passionate about and selling two books that were a lot of fun to write – so that helps too.

Zura:  Since my greatest passion is journaling, I was pleased to see that you include a “Journal Juju” on each page of the Awe-Manac.  What does journaling [I know that's not an official word, but I am using it anyway because it needs to be one and maybe Google has some influence on Daniel Webster] mean to you?

[Edit by Zura:  I don't think Daniel is the dictionary guy?  Who is Webster?]

Jill:  I agree. I changed my spell-check to add “journaling” as a word because I was annoyed when it kept telling me it was misspelled. Oh wait, what was the question?

Journaling means the following to me: practicing, self-talk that nurtures and motivates, play, test driving ideas, doodling, reflecting, centering, grounding, complaining, revising, mind-mapping, listing, thanking, acknowledging, and inventing. It is essential to my sanity and to the progression of ideas to reality.

Zura:  So many people I know speak of not having time to create.  We seem to think we need blocks with hours of time, but your book is the perfect answer.  You give us a page each day of the year with a few very inspiring things to get our creative juices flowing.  Did you know you were writing a solution to a problem so many people seem to have?

Jill:  Yes, good observation. That’s why I wrote it that way. Taking small, repeated steps is what the Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coaching model I teach is based upon.. Kaizen is a Japanese word meaning “small, continuous steps.” Little bites of inspiration make it easy to stay creatively fortified in a time when we can become easily overwhelmed. Getting a creative hit just needs to happen for 5 minutes a day to make a huge change and that’s what The Awe-manac can provide.

Zura:  Finally, Jill, is there a question you wish people would ask and haven’t?  Something burning inside you that you want to share with us?

Jill: Yes, I’d like someone to ask me to be on Ellen or at the very least, The Colbert Report. Other than that, I ask you to ask yourselves, “What brings me alive?” And then, break it down into small and fun steps and go for it.

Thank you, Zura. Your blog is wonderful.

The Awes have it,

Jill

E*Trade Baby

February 11, 2009 - 1:24 pm 2 Comments

I consider TV commercials a necessary evil.   You guys in England don’t have commercials, right?  But you have to pay a LOT for tv?  So, I figure I just have to put up with them.  I prefer to watch movie channels that don’t have them, and if I do watch a show that has commercials I ususally flip around til they’re over.  Especially if it’s BILLY MAYS screaming at me.

etrade_babyii

But there is one commercial that I will actually flip channels to try and find!  It’s the E*Trade commercials with the baby.  Have you seen these? They are so so funny!  Today I found a video of the outtakes from the commercials.  They are so funny!!!  Please watch this. It will lighten your day and give you a good laugh.

I Love Me Some Funky Socks

February 8, 2009 - 4:33 am 3 Comments

You may have noticed that I love crazy socks.  I have a huge drawer full – socks, tights, leggings – the more colorful the better.

Here are some I want, want, want!

sangria

These are handmade and expensive, but I adore the colors and patterns. You can find these and lots more at SockLady.com

socks-awesomesports

How fun would it be to have a whole wardrobe of polka-dot socks in all these colors?  I’d wear different ones on each foot. What fun!  I found these here.

sock-amazon

These are by Laurel Burch.  Art on your feet!  I love these.  But I wouldn’t want to wear shoes.  I’d just sport my socks and walk around all smug.  These are sold on Amazon and you can see them here.

socks-rods

These are interesting socks.  Besides looking awesome, they’re specifically sold as socks to wear under boots for people who ride horses.  Well, I guess women… can’t see no horse-riding guy wearing these!  They are thin and made of lycra.  I so want these.  They have lots of patterns and colors.  Check ‘em out.

socks-swirly

Okay, these are MINE!  I mean, swirls on socks!!!  Actually, I don’t know where to buy them because I found this image on Flickr.  Bummer!

socks-tights

I found these on Flickr, too so I can’t have them either.  But they are so cool!  I have socks similar to this, but I want tights like this.

Those socks in the header image of this blog?  Those are really my feet :)

Woodworking Love

February 5, 2009 - 8:52 am No Comments

I wanted some weathered wood to make frames and crosses for my Etsy shop, so I called fence companies until I found a really nice man that gave me an old fence he tore down.  The others wanted me to pay for them…like 70 cents a picket!!  He even delivered them!  He brought me 70 feet of old, beat up fence panels.  I am in heaven!

img_0040

Mister has helped me, a little at a time, remove all the pickets and get all the nails out of them.   AND — he bought a table saw so we can make the frames and crosses!

So, last weekend we were doing a little project at his house that involved sawing some boards for a cabinet.  The weather was cold and we were hoping it would warm up so we could get the saw out and cut the boards.   The saw is sitting in his dining room, so one night I said, “Why can’t we just cut them in the dining room?  What’s the worst that can happen?  We’ll get sawdust on the floor, but you have a Shop-Vac.”  His eyes lit up and we gleefully set about cutting the boards.

It was so much fun because he had ordered a miter guide and a little thingy called a Wixey, and we got to play with them.

randy-saw

We were both amazed that we had found another person who thought it was more fun to play with the saw, even if it was too cold outside, than to worry about the mess.

For posterity I took this picture of the sawdust on the floor before we cleaned it up.  I considered keeping a little of it for my journal.

Bohemian Meets Man’s Man

November 3, 2008 - 4:02 am 5 Comments

Mister and I are getting married next October.    My furniture and all household items have been in storage in Texas the past year.  So, he hasn’t seen any of my stuff to know my decorating style, my art or how funky I am.

Thanksgiving weekend, we are going to get my things and bring them to his garage.  We’ve decided to go ahead and replace his living room furniture with mine.  And since he doesn’t have a dining room table, we’ll bring mine into his house.

That conversation was quite interesting.   I told him about my dining table and how old it is (from the 1800′s) and that it needing gluing because it’s wobbly.  He suggested that after we glue it, we take it to be stripped and refinish it.  That horrified me!  The beauty of the chipped layers of paint is what makes me love that table.

He couldn’t phathom why anyone would would an old table with chipped paint.  This is going to be an interesting time introducing my “home” to him.   He is a man’s man that has fishing poles in his bathroom.  No, really, he does!  In his dining room is a table saw.   He’s so fun to do projects with because he has every clamp, tool or gadget you could ever need.  But, I wonder what he will think of antique clothes hanging on the walls?

Should I warn him about my collection of beat up, broken and chipped dolls, or just wait?  :)
