Evolution of My Art
When I first started creating what I considered “serious” art and selling it, I was doing collages. I did both paper collages and digitally produced collages. I considered both to be my media. After a few years, I felt an urging to try other media. I learned to make beaded jewelry and I learned more about abstract painting. I tried polymer clay and many other things. I do love painting with acrylics, but I find that my ability to conceive designs is not what I’d like it to be. I do like making crosses and frames with beads and found objects. I guess it’s a form of assemblage.
A couple of weeks ago, I had a sudden, strong feeling that I was no good at anything. I felt that I was kidding myself about being an artist. As I allowed myself to stay with that feeling and journaled about it, I gradually started being drawn back to collage.
I think it’s important for artists to stretch out of their comfort zone. I don’t regret spending the past year or more dabbling in lots of different types of creating. I learned a lot about paint and various techniques that I will continue to use. But, I think I was right in the first place that collage is my medium.
I haven’t been at home where all my collage supplies are for a couple of weeks. During that time I’ve had a great urge to do collages again. I came home today and I’ve been so content working with scissors, paper and glue! The image above is a collage I made several years ago. It remains one of my favorites.
I don’t know if I will still enjoy creating digital collages, but I suspect I will. This is one of my favorites.

Hi Zura! I’m glad I found a bookmark to your blog. It’s been a while since I’ve visited. I love your Frida collage! The words are perfect, “I’m mad. You’re mad.” It seems us artist type people are pretty insane much of our lives. :O)

(I hope this posts alright. The blanks above aren’t showing what we’re suppose to put in there.)

Hey Bill! It’s great to hear from you. I tried a new layout for my blog and it got things messed up, but your comment was fine. Sorry for the problems. How are you?

It makes me feel so much better to hear that you have had that “no good” feeling….I admire your work, your blogs on my top fave list because I do think of you as one of the artists that I look up to. So, thank you for the post! I’m glad you feel better now that you found your way back to collage, and your Frida piece is excellent! I just found collage, and I’m feeling like I may have found my “thing”, but since I change my mind so much, it’s hard to tell!

Trish, thank you so much for your kind words. Collage is so cool because you can use paint, paper and other embellishments, too. I am excited about creating some new things. I’ve always worked fairly small (8 x 10) and now I’m wanting to make some larger pieces. Keep me posted on how you like doing collage!
